BENEDICTA Q. RUIZ

BENEDICTA
Q. RUIZ

...SLOW DOWN

as my thoughts
drift to the
end of the line
i slow down
to watch the light
of a flickering candle
that has lit
a darkened room
like a final breath
soon, it will be
extinguished.

i slow down
to watch the last
petal of a pink rose
when once its
beauty reigned
in a garden,
soon, it will fall
to the ground
like all life forms
must return
to earth.

I slow down
to listen
to the ending
lines of a song
once an uplifting
melody
now a melancholy tune
haunting
soon, its last note
will vibrate
goodbye.

WHAT THEN?

wen all the shadows
have fallen asleep
and you are there pondering
how life has treated you
how much heartaches
you have endured
just being here
with people you thought
would care.

but no perfect
or imperfect beings
as you know them
can really be there
for you
they go out of their ways
at times to lift you up
when you are down
but mostly you have to rise
on your own
pick yourself up
flick the dirt off your arms
and step by step
move on.

you ask, what then?

move on
you must
until the shadows
are aroused to move
along with
you.

A FOND MEMORY...

the sea surges
and the salty mists
dampen the air i breathe
the rushing waters
flooded the sand
where once we stood
no words to utter then
just two sets of eyes
gazing into each other
mindful
of two hearts beating
as one
of two souls merging
into a dream
we had let it float away
beyond retrieval
a fond memory
to cherish
and in this moment
the sea roars relentlessly
drowning my voice
as i say
goodbye.
