BRITANNIA

Shreds of wind scavenge the last few leaves. An early afternoon shines mischievously. Closed is the old, precious box of a golden summer, that was babbling idly like an infant.  Scents of roses and nasturtiums fled away. The box had covered itself with a heavy old gold lid. It put on a precious garment woven with the stars.

Britannia at the Tate Britain portal with her arms raised looks proudly on the River Thames. She is wearing a new silk, patterned, pastel dress, waving in the wind. Yinka Shonibare - is the name of its new tailor. The name is exotic, like the robe. Designs painted by Indonesian forests. The material is mysterious, fragrant, woven by Jamaican sun, brought to the Dutch coast, after sailing the oceans, fighting with the hurricanes.

Today Britannia as a young Indian woman is coquettishly showing her naked arm, revealing her pride, her flawless integrated into and reconciled with the strange-sounding name of the tailor, the artist. Proud Britannia.

Strzępy wiatru wymiatają ostatnie liście. Wczesne popołudnie błyszczy przewrotnie. Zamknęło się stare, drogocenne pudło ze złotym latem, jak niemowlak gaworzącym leniwie. Uciekły zapachy róż i nasturcji. Pudło przykryło się ciężkim wiekiem okutym starym złotem. Nałożyło szatę utkaną drogocennymi gwiazdami.

Britannia na portalu galerii Tate Britain z uniesionym ramieniem spogląda dumnie na Tamizę. Ma na sobie nową jedwabną, wzorzystą, pastelową suknię, falującą na wietrze. Yinka Shonibare – tak nazywa się jej dzisiejszy krawiec. Imię egzotyczne, niczym szata. Wzory malowały indonezyjskie lasy. Materia tajemnicza, wonna, utkana jamajskim słońcem; przywędrowała do wybrzeży Holandii, płynąc po oceanach, walcząc z huraganami.

Dziś Britannia jak młoda Hinduska zalotnie pokazuje nagie ramię, odkrywa swą dumę, nienaganność wkomponowaną i pogodzoną z dziwnie brzmiącym imieniem krawca, artysty. Dumna Britannia.

ANNA MARIA MICKIEWICZ is a Polish-born poet, writer and editor, who writes both in Polish and English. Anna lived in California and has now been in London for many years. She edits the annual literary magazine Pamiętnik Literacki (The Literary Notebook), London. She is a member of English Pen. As a student, she was a co-founder of a magazine Wywrotowiec (The Subversive). Her first collection of verse was published in 1985 and her selection of short stories and essays Okruchy z Okrągłego Stołu (Breadcrumbs from the Round Table) appeared in 2000. Her volume of poetry Proscenium was published in 2010.

Anna’s poetry has appeared in the United States, UK, Australia and Poland in many literary journals, including Syndic Literary Journal (California), Kritya, The Exiled Link (UK), Poezja Dzisiaj, Akant (Poland) and anthologies, such as Chopin with Cherries. A Tribute in Verse, (Moonrise Press: Los Angeles, 2010), Through A Child’s Eyes: Poems from World War Two, selected by: Moira Andrew (Poetry Space Ltd: Bristol, 2013), Contemporary Writers of Poland, edited by: Danuta Blaszak (Dreammee Little City: Orlando, 2013).

She regularly publishes poetry and literature in the London-based Nowy Czas - New Time - and has also written for many other journals, including Wprost (Poland), The Davis Enterprise (California), Nowy Dziennik (New York). Her poetry has featured on the radio in the UK (Poets Anonymous), Australia and

Poland.
