ANIAMMA JOSEPH

ANIAMMA JOSEPH

HUMAN RACE

We are born human
Made of the same stuff
As I grew up, I joined a race
What began as a slow pace,
Gathered momentum
Till it reached the final gallop
Blinded, I didn’t see left or right
Running the fastest race I could
In between, buzzed in my ear
“Where’s your brother?”
“Am I my brother’s keeper”,
Irksome came my retort.
Again the  undertone
“Somebody near you is falling.”
“So what?” ire mounting up
I took another leap.
“Someone far away is too weak to join the race.”
“Damn it! Why should I care? I’ve wasted my time,”
Muttering, frantically I ran.
Panting I reached the point of finish
No one on ground
Walls were closing on me
I could see only the bare ground
Alone I stood in the vast arena!
Couldn’t relish the victory
A sudden emptiness engulfed me
Hollowness of the race
The mad race
Of the Black, White, or Brown—
Different, but of the same genus
We are born human
Made of the same stuff
The human race
To run the race together.
