CLARE ROLF
THIRST
Drink the tears of dust and ice
feel the pause of a butterfly’s
wing
Taste a moment tremble as you see
the axle spin but hands not set
free
from exhausted thoughts
pierced by bulleted lead
Censuring intelligent refugee eyes
oblivious to platypus sigh
Bee’s honey bleeding dead leaves
filling the cradle of glacial jars
In-built memories ruptured from
their bed
Lying starved with nescient thirst
de-veiled de-treed
fraying thread earth reweaves
Offering a sip, the grief
spills its way
Longing for our own

HUNGRY FOR DAY
Love satisfied
colours rest
midway between
intensity folded
over over clouds kissing
Rodin's sunset
until death
expelling indigo
petals uncurl
night velvet waves
So forth so forth
Suffocating
foam
until love decides
it wants the moon and tides

THE DESIRES OF TREES
I do not sing of a raging heaven
nor
hell
Where no red tailed cockatoo
Needs to Imagine being last
sullen calmness or building a well
A green bridge overflows
fanning confidence of its age
Forged long ago above the dirt
A green that does not cry
when it finds it can still love
even though it has killed
No circles of Dante brimfire
just life dancing ignorant and
strong
creeping away into dappled shade or
toward a sun
gentle muscle ripples through time
outlasting younger heavens and
their hells
no music to compete with birdsong
only certainty of a seamless one
