ANDREW SCOTT

Dying Fields

The swamplands are on the north of town,

surrounded by the thickest trees.

Though the lands are large

you cannot see them

unless you know that they are there.

For decades, the large marshlands

have been the dying fields

for missing bodies.

Forgotten ladies from all around.

The waters are the perfect place.

No one searches.

Everyone knows they are there.

Runaways that are not reported,

murdered and dropped.

Ladies the police never cared about.

The ladies are mothers and daughters.

The powers that be

only looked with lukewarm interest.

Many bodies with no true burial.

Rotting away, washed out

in the grave of the Dying Fields

Not Afraid (To Be Afraid)

My body is shaking,

the mind is overflowing

with many emotions.

Fear is attempting to grip

the insides of my body.

Constantly whispering to myself

as my inside heaved,

spinning around and around,

that the unexpected

is not as large to overcome

as my thoughts are making it.

Calm the slight, nervous shaking

as I look at the dark

that is the mind,

playing games

of non-existent disaster.

The challenge is embracing

all the fighting emotions

that are holding everything back.

Know that in moving forward,

to be not afraid of being afraid.

Heart’s Torn

Each moment, there is such a conflict

from the chest’s beating heart.

The heart is always torn

between being human

and being logical.

Emotion will attempt

to rule over the heart.

Making it skip beats.

Rage or sadness

takeover in the moments

at everyday circumstances

until the beats calm.

Rational thinking and breathing

take away the blood’s impulses.

Each day challenges

tearing at the heart.
