Ruby Bridges

 

Ruby passed the exam to school

in which

the exam on humanity

had not been passed by the teachers,

the students or their parents.

Whole generations,

out of habit, had nurtured hatred

of those

on whom white shirts shone brighter than black ones.

 

The problem was not in the clothing;

it was in the belief that white was better.

 

Unaware of the danger,

an Afro-American girl

in the full daylight, protected by big men,

succeeded to create normality.

 

Only years later did she realize that

 

What you get at home, you will give to the world.

Trud tworzenia

Ruby Bridges

 

Ruby zdała test do szkoły,

w której

egzaminu z człowieczeństwa

nie zdali nauczyciele,

uczniowie ani ich rodzice.

Całe pokolenia,

z przyzwyczajenia pielęgnowały nienawiść

do tych,

na których biała bluzka lśniła bardziej od czarnej.

 

Problem nie tkwił w ubiorze,

ale w przekonaniu, że białe było lepsze.

 

Nieświadoma zagrożenia

afroamerykańska dziewczynka,

w blasku dnia, pod osłoną rosłych mężczyzn

przetrwała trud tworzenia normalności.

 

Dopiero po latach zrozumiała, że

 

to, co wyniesiesz z domu, dasz światu.

 

Absent-Mindedness

 

We create problems

which should not exist.

Have we forgotten

what they told us –

our grandfathers and parents?

Errors are a human thing,

but why

do we have to repeat them?

 

In the absent-mindedness

contaminated by our own ‘self’

we build abysses between

respect and disrespect

of the beauty created by Others.

 

Others, because Strangers.

Roztargnienie

 

Stwarzamy problemy,

które nie powinny toczyć się wokół nas.

Czyżbyśmy zapomnieli,

co mówili

dziadkowie, rodzice?

Błędy są dla wszystkich,

ale w jakim celu

mamy popełniać je ponownie?

 

W roztargnieniu

skażonym przez własne ja

budujemy przepaść pomiędzy

poszanowaniem i nieposzanowaniem

piękna tworzonego przez Innych.

 

Innych, bo Obcych.
