Ancient Bulwark

On the Death of Pope Francis

 

Lonely in the sea, averse to storms,

ancient bulwark I'm going to gaze

when the turmoil quiets of the waves

and of the sky, a calm mirror appears.

 

Then a choir of seagulls rises,

whose cries tear my heart apart.

There is a lack of fish in the seabed,

only plastic emerges everywhere.

 

Now I remember past seasons

while I am intent on observing

algae, shells, and sea creatures ...

 

So remote that time seems,

I never saw in my life years

so terrible and sudden destruction.

 

Swift is the wind of decay,

much more than the coexistence

of an upright world, prone to reason,

of Pace true builder in this season.

 

Torcello

(Venezia Island)

 

Here is Torcello with its bent dreams

like those flowers on the capitals,

where I searched for love;

I sucked the nectar

from those flowers like a bee

suspended over the expanse

green lagoon.

I loved the wind

that bent the grass

and the leaves sighing

on the porch where

drunk we embraced each other.

 

Torcello, a suspended dream

at the old bell tower

that resounds for days

satisfied with warmth,

slippery as mud,

like our bodies

sweaty and clinging

like ivy around

to the pillars of life,

in ecstatic censual joy.

 

Torcello rings

timeless hours,

days passed

between lovers' sighs

in the shadow of the temple,

in the shadow of the roots

of a time past

of exoduses and repopulations,

lands snatched from the sea

by travelling refugees.

 

Torcello turns to the sun

The eyes dazzled

by the mirror of water

salt marsh,

inverted reflection

of the sky now that

the tidal wave

feels the resonance

of solitude

in narrow channels,

that the grass closes

to the silence of the hour.
