FRANCA COLOZZO

Florence

Here is Florence with her dreams folded

Like flowers on the capitals,

Where I sought love;

I sucked the nectar

From those flowers like a bee

Suspended over the expanse

Of ancient memories.

I love the Renaissance wind

That bends marble memories

And the sigh of the foliage

In the portico where, drunken, we huddled:

You, Dante, and I, Beatrice.

Florence, a suspended dream

On Giotto's ancient bell tower

Which resounds with the days

Sated by the burning heat,

Slippery like silence.

Brunelleschi observes

From the top of the dome

Our bodies, sweaty and clinging

Like ivy around

The columns of life,

In ecstatic joy of the senses.

Florence: the Baptistery,

The Cathedral, bells that ring

Timeless hours and days gone by

Among lovers' sighs

In the shadow of the temples,

In the shadow of the roots of history,

Of a time gone by:

Dante in exile, exoduses and wars,

The David as an emblem of past glories.

Michelangelo’s Dawn, Day, Dusk, and Night

Glance sideways

The death of time,

Among patrons,

Lorenzo the Magnificent

And traveling refugees.

Florence winks at the sun

Her eyes dazzled

From the mirror of marble

Monumental facades,

Reflection upside down

Of the sky now that everything

Succumbs to barbaric fate

She hears the toll of solitude

That evening opens to the silence.

Orpheus And Eurydice

Eurydice was caught in the fatal snare,

Orpheus broke the promise given

To bring his bride back to life.

Into the kingdom of shadows she goes,

Hades resounds with her moans.

Zephyr does not blow on the Styx,

I see Charon among naked souls.

A prolonged and mournful howl is heard

Amidst cascades of frayed memories.

Peace always proclaimed in a voice

shakes the walls of my great sorrow.

I descend into Hades with uncertain step

In search of my Eurydice.

Peace, I proclaim to the world that does not say

‘End’ to the war in the Middle East,

Gaza more and more hell on earth,

I see no Mercy beyond the barbarity.
