Uncertain
I am certainly
uncertain
By just about
everything
In these
uncertain days.
We never know
which
Way the wind
will blow
Or how important
Coal or medicine
Or anything will
be
That we see or
don’t see
In these
uncertain days.
The Family
Six ladies in
their eighties
Sit on a brown
brick porch
They smoke
cigarettes
While waiting
for the parade.
Two of them were
born and raised
In this very
house, all of them
Are cousins
whose parents
Began this
celebration
A hundred years
ago, and so
They compare
this year’s
With last
year’s, sodalities with
Their favorite
saints.
Soon children
dressed
As angels
appear, then those
Wearing costumes
From various
provinces
And a donkey
cart, then
The band
comprised
Of old men, the
mayor
And those
running for office
Citizens and
politicians
Arm in arm.
