When our eyes first met

we fell in love.

What day was it

when we were married?

 

You haven’t forgotten,

have you?

 

The children—

their graduations,

their going off to the army,

their weddings…

 

Then the grandchildren.

“Can such things ever be forgotten?”

we had laughed

the day I retired.

 

That grandchild in high school now

when was he born?

 

Tell me,

do you remember

all of it?

 

Or was all of this

just yesterday,

truly?

 

Dünle sohbet

 

Göz göze gelince

âşık olmuştuk.

 

Hangi gündü

evlendiğimiz?

 

Unutmadın değil mi?

 

Çocukların

mezuniyetleri,

askere gidişleri,

düğünleri…

Derken torunlar.

 

“Bunlar unutulur mu hiç?”

diye gülmüştük

emekli olduğum gün.

 

Liseye giden torun

ne zaman doğmuştu?

 

Sahi,

sen hatırlıyor musun

hepsini?

 

Yoksa bütün bunlar

dün müydü sahiden?

A house, a chimney

even if it is only

a stick figure

you draw today

in your notebook,

 

Whatever your hands are shaping now,

may your efforts

never be in vain

without forgetting

how to play.

 

It is clear,

with this earnest haste,

with your careful gaze,

your innocent face,

your gentle smile,

the rider of the winds…

BARBAROS İRDELMEN

 

Dr. BARBAROS İRDELMEN, poet, writer, translator, and retired specialist in internal medicine and nephrology, continues to make an impact not only in Turkey but also on the global literary stage. With 19 published poetry collections to date, his works have been included in numerous national and international anthologies, poetry festivals, and selected literary compilations. Currently a poetry columnist for Edebiyat Magazin Newspaper and TV, also contributes actively to prominent literary journals such as Pazartesi14 NEYYA Edebiyat, Kirpi Edebiyat ve Düşünce Dergisi, writer for the Papirus Magazine, Literature House, in abroad Our Poetry Archive, Atunis Galaxy Poetry, Poetry Leaves writer. As a member of the Writers Syndicate of Turkey, he is not only known for his original poetry but also as a leading figure in the translation of world poetry written in English into Turkish. His significant contributions to international literature include his role in translating the global poetry project "Poetry Without Borders", which has been published in approximately 40 different languages since 1984, into Turkish as of July 2024. İrdelmen is also a member of the poetry translators community, part of the ITHACA Foundation (Spain), building cultural and literary bridges across borders through the power of poetry.

 

Dr. BARBAROS İRDELMEN, Istanbul, Turkiye’de yaşıyor, şair, yazar, çevirmen ve emekli iç hastalıkları ve nefroloji uzmanı  sadece Türkiye'de değil, küresel edebiyat sahnesinde de çalışmalarını sürdürmektedir. Bugüne kadar 19 şiir kitabı yayımlanan İrdelmen'in eserleri, çok sayıda ulusal ve uluslararası antolojide, şiir festivalinde ve seçkin edebiyat derlemelerinde yer almıştır. Halen Edebiyat Dergisi Gazetesi ve TV'de şiir köşe yazarlığı yapan İrdelmen, ayrıca Pazartesi14 NEYYA Edebiyat, Kirpi Edebiyat ve Düşünce Dergisi gibi önde gelen edebiyat dergilerine, Papirus Dergisi'ne, Edebiyat Evi'ne, yurtdışında ise Şiir Arşivimiz, Atunis Galaksi Şiiri, Şiir Yaprakları yazarlığına aktif olarak katkıda bulunmaktadır. Türkiye Yazarlar Sendikası üyesi olarak, özgün şiirlerinin yanı sıra İngilizceden Türkçeye dünya şiiri çevirilerinde de önde gelen bir isim olarak tanınmaktadır. Uluslararası edebiyata yaptığı önemli katkılar arasında, 1984'ten beri yaklaşık 40 farklı dilde yayımlanan küresel şiir projesi "Sınır Tanımayan Şiir"in Temmuz 2024 itibarıyla Türkçeye çevrilmesindeki rolü de bulunmaktadır. İrdelmen ayrıca, şiirin gücüyle sınırlar ötesinde kültürel ve edebi köprüler kuran ITHACA Vakfı'nın (İspanya) bir parçası olan şiir çevirmenleri topluluğunun da bir üyesidir.
