I Do Not Wait
I am the quiet
shadow
drinking the
evening
from an empty
cup.
In utter
solitude,
the soul gathers
its last stars
and conceals
them
where no
disappointment
can ever reach
them again.
And It Is
Silence
The voices came
like the sea
against distant rocks,
leaving salt
upon the hands
of evening.
I built houses
of light,
fragile before
the wind,
with years
scattered
into the grain
of time.
Now silence
is the only
bread.
I break its
shadow
within the
deserted room.
I ask for no
returns.
The soul reposes
like a hidden
pool
among summer
stones.
And no one knows
how deep
this solitude is
that saves.
Not Mere Poetry
Not mere poetry
is this that I proclaim,
But witness
wrested from the crags of Time,
Gathered upon
the flinty road of mortal days,
Where leaves,
like fallen hopes, are driven
By the barren
winds of weariness.
These are the
days when comfort is no more,
When the blood
of infants cries unto the heavens,
And every dawn
unfolds its mournful scroll,
Bearing the
black liturgy of humankind's undoing.
Veiled in the
tattered vestments of the mist,
The sun ascends
with silent countenance.
The titmouse
utters not its morning hymn;
The swallows
flee the violated sky,
Tracing with
unseen wings the paths of sorrow,
Where
abandonment hangs suspended
Like a prophecy
yet unfulfilled.
Then does my
heart retreat into the hidden vale
Where the
hawthorn dares its first white bloom,
A frail
annunciation against the reign of frost.
For every nest
lies veiled from human sight,
Since man,
enthroned upon his madness,
Has levelled
field and forest alike,
Exalting cement
above the living earth,
Law without
mercy, pardon without justice,
The cold
dominion of forgetfulness.
There rises now
the ancient spectre,
Wearing a
thousand modern names:
The fever that
once darkened nations
Returns with an
altered visage,
Yet bearing
still the mark of Cain.
Thus every
genocide is first conceived
Within the
secret chambers of the soul,
Then crowned by
the false order
That men dare
call civilization.
This is no
fleeting song,
Nor ornament
woven for idle ears.
It is a refrain
of the eternal wilderness,
Echoing through
untamed heights,
Across the
fearless summits
Where the spirit
is tried by wind and silence.
There my breath
dissolves into the Infinite;
There my soul,
unshackled by the dust of earth,
Lifts its gaze
beyond the passing kingdoms of men,
Awaiting the Day
when Truth shall speak again,
And Justice,
long exiled,
Shall descend
clothed in light,
While every
mountain and every valley
Bear witness to
the everlasting Word.
