Lost In The
Flood
It has not been a
full decade yet
but the
rebuilding of this little town
has been so slow
since the year
that spring
flooded this place out.
When our little
river in the heart of town
could not handle
the flow.
Little homes,
generations old
were in little
pnds of water.
Almost taking
them
along with the
flow of the river.
Hardware and
grocery stores emptied
and there was not
a way to restock.
The roads were
washed out
or cracked under
the pressure.
For weeks, canoes
were
the only way to
travel
from place to
place.
People did share
what they had.
Food for all,
potlucks for those without
were such a
welcome sight.
Community spirit
never washed away.
The destruction
and loss
was felt when
nature’s reminder
finally lowered
itself
to just flow
within the insies of the river banks.
So much to
rebuild
and not everyone
could afford to.
Insurance may not
have covered the loss
and jobs were
taken away.
People could not
wait
for the roads to
be rebuilt.
Families had to
leave
just to try to
survive.
The town is still
a shell
of what it once
was.
Homes have fallen
from
the years of a
rotten foundation.
Not sure if it will
ever
be the same as
before
in decades from
now.
People around
here are trying
but there was so
much lost in the flood.

Dear Stranger
VIII
Dear Stranger,
how are you today?
There have been
things us onlookers
have seen that
are a bit concerning
and maybe you can
help explain.
There are those
pills being passed around
that are taking
the lives of so many
who believe that
beyond the quick high
there is nothing
else that will happen to them
until they lay
still in a buried casket.
As more and more
are in the news
being buried
along side so many others.
Your actions
become confusing
as you continue
to take the artificial high.
There has to be a
reason
that you believe
you are immune
to the garden of
death these pills bring,
though you have
read the effects too
and have seen
pictures of the bodies.
As you raise the
next pill to your mouth
even though it
may be your last one
The rest of us
wonder why the road to suicide.
That is what we
do not understand
and is what makes
you a stranger to us all.

Died For
I see the people
scream
in the dark
streets of today,
protesting and
believing
in what they are
doing
is the right
thing to do.
When I marched so
many years ago
I fought for
these freedoms
for all the
people of this nation
and the citizens
of the world.
Fires are being
lit
by the opposing
sides,
burning the
voices of reason.
Torches are being
thrown
and shelters
being crumbled.
The scenes remind
me
of the war torn
country sides
where so-called
enemies
fought and killed
each other
for reasons that
neither understood.
The prayers of a
peaceful embrace
have never left
my mind
since the day I marched
on behalf of all.
I think of that
all the time
when I see the
hate of today.
Trying to
remember
that this freedom
and fight
was what I fought
for
and my friends
died for.
