Flame Has No Tongue

 

“It doesn’t ask, it doesn’t separate, it doesn’t wait…

It doesn’t recognize a tree, a bird, a nest…

As the fire grows, the earth’s memory falls silent;

what rises to the sky isn’t just smoke,

it’s that indescribable fear that grows in a living being’s eyes.

 

That fear…

increases not as it burns, but as it is lost.

It’s the heartbeat of a sparrow timidly singing on a branch,

a squirrel clinging to its young in its burrow,

a gazelle unable to escape the flames.

 

Flame has no tongue, but it does have a voice:

it screams in the wind,

it silences the forest turned to ashes.

 

And with every sapling,

we plant not just a tree,

but hope for thousands of lives in the earth.

Because we know that,

with every green branch, life begins anew.

Be (My) Passionate Love

 

                            -As the dirty dark nightmares rust in my soul-

 

Do not recall the nights you were late.

Extend rains from clouds,

Water the purple bunches on my body.

Let the particular body

Grow taller in the very fine night . . .

Let the skin smile innocently, like a purple violet.

In this place where only "I" have remained

Without becoming ashes in the burning flame of your mouth,

Shower love wet with rain on my lips.

Be (my) passionate love that does not end.

LEYLA IŞIK: Educator-Poet-Writer-Artist-Painter. She graduated from Teacher Training College in Usak and Faculty of Education of Eskisehir Anadolu University. She had worked as a teacher for many years.
