LIDIA CHIARELLI
BIG SUR, SUMMER AFTERNOON
If anyone had strength to hear the
invisible…
(Allen Ginsberg, from: Elegy For
Neal Cassady)
We walk down the dusty path
this hot August afternoon.
A breath of wind
comes to meet us
and takes us to the shed
suspended on rocks,
eroded by the cruelty of time.
We seem to hear a chisel
slowly giving form
to a block of fragrant redwood:
"Wind Spirit"
"Firebird" “Spring Dragon”:
fantastic creatures of Edmund Kara
come alive
myths and magic taking shape
before our eyes.
Carried through the timeless
we pause and listen
to the ancient ocean waves
that continue to tell his story
CITY LIGHTS BOOKSTORE
(for Lawrence Ferlinghetti)
The strong and bright colors
of a mural
catch me
into a spiral of lights
while I walk down Kerouac Alley
on this hot July morning
A sign in the window:
"Sit Down and Read"
invites to enter.
The old wooden floor
creaks under my steps.
Between innumerable bookshelves
I can now breathe
the words of freedom
that here - as always -
take shape.
And you,
Lawrence Ferlinghetti,
still hang around these books
bringing your message
of solidarity and peace
to the oppressed of the earth
after all these years
you still are
"The voice of those who have
no voice
the voice of the invisibles of the
world…”
POINT LOBOS, MORNING
“There is nothing of the sea left
but its sound”
Dylan Thomas: from “Ballad of the
long legged bait”
The heavy traffic of Highway One
is behind us.
In the silence of summer
the mists of the morning
surround the dark rocks
and tide slowly caresses sand.
Little silver gleams
on the turquoise Pacific
send messages of light
as the trail along the coast
leads to secret coves
where saltiness pervades the air.
A sudden flight of cormorants
draws new geometries in the sky
and we stand and listen to
the relentless pulse of the sea.
